(2004 + only) Based on comments from our users we have improved the 2004 to 2009 instructions to make a few steps easier. In particular I want to thank Hobbit for providing many useful improvements!

You need this kit to install the Optima battery in a Toyota Prius 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 2009 and 2010 because the North American Prius comes with connectors for Japanese electrical posts. The kit replaces the connectors and allows you to hook up the vent tubes.
The battery itself fits nicely in the compartment in the 2004 and latter Prius. In the 2000 to 2003 you have to modify the battery bracket. However, it is easy to do and we provide instructions. Also you should be aware that there is less space around the battery in the 2000 to 2003 Prius and we have not crash tested this installation.
With this kit you can replace your Prius 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 2007, 2008 and 2009 battery with a longer lasting battery.
You can keep the original Toyota battery connectors so if you or a future owner of the car should ever want to go back to a battery with Japanese electrical posts you can.

The Federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 prohibits a manufacture from curtailing warranty coverage due to after-market parts unless it can be demonstrated that they caused the problem.
Tools needed:
- flat screw driver
- 10mm wrench or 10mm deep socket
- 10mm socket
- socket extender (not needed for 2010)
- 12mm wrench or socket
- 1/2 inch wrench or 1/2 inch deep socket (13mm will do)
- vise, large crescent wrench or vice grips
- small crescent wrench or pliers
- tape
- hammer or rubber mallet
- wire cutter
The positive connector has to connect with the battery and the Toyota fuse assembly. We had it custom made! You also will not find the vent connectors in an auto parts store.
We have written and rewritten the instructions to make it easy for most people however if you have no desire to work on electrical parts you may want to buy the kit and have your battery professionally installed.
At least three users have told me that their 2001-2003 Prius now gets better mileage with the new battery. One customer with a 2004 also reported this. One classic owner told me that getting a new battery restored his mileage back to the original mileage he was getting when the car was brand new and another classic Prius owner told me that he is now getting better mileage then he did originally. So if you 12 volt battery is weak it could also be affecting your gas mileage.
If you are not sure about the state of your current battery we have instruction on how to test it here.
